Hawaii Renewable Energy Plan In 2045

The state of Hawaii passed legislation in 2015 requiring the state's electricity suppliers to provide 100% renewable energy by 2045. After a year and a half, reports from several states in the state indicate that the goal of 100% renewable energy can be reached by 2045, while other islands will achieve their goals by 2030.

In the ever-changing power model, the Hawaiian Power Company (HECO) can still play an important role and hopes to take action.

The Hawaiian Electric Power Company (HECO) reported that it is negotiating with developers on long-term power purchase agreements on seven projects on three islands. The specific content of the project is:

• In Oahu, three solar power + battery energy storage projects, the total solar power generation is 120 megawatts, and the total energy storage capacity is 515 megawatt hours.

• In Maui, two solar power + battery energy storage projects, the total solar power generation is 75 megawatts, and the total energy storage capacity is 300 megawatt hours.

• On the island of Hawaii, the two solar power + battery energy storage projects, the total solar power generation is 60 megawatts, and the total energy storage capacity is 240 megawatt hours.

If the solar + energy storage project meets the current industry standard for a 1:4 ratio of power to capacity, then its megawatt rating is approximately equal to the amount of solar power generated at the peak level. This makes sense because the state of solar power in Hawaii exceeds 10% of total electricity generation, and daytime solar production has led to major changes in its net metering and energy storage requirements.

A few days ago, Maui, Hawaii, announced an energy storage project with an installed capacity of 2.87 megawatts to sell electricity at 11.06 /kWh. Last year, AES and the Kauai Electric Cooperative announced a 28 MW solar power facility and a 20 MW/100 MWh (for 5 hours) energy storage system with a power price of 11/kWh.
