Abu Dhabi's future energy company Masdar and the Seychelles utility company are working together to build a 5MW photovoltaic and 3.3MWh battery-storage photovoltaic power plant project.

The project is funded by the Abu Dhabi Development Fund's 31 million dirhams ($8.44 million) loan and the equity of the Seychelles utility company.

The 5MW Ile de Romainville solar power station is located on the same site as the existing 6MW Victoria Harbour wind power station. The wind power station was also built by Masdar in 2013 and received A$103 million Dirham financing from the Abu Dhabi Development Fund. The wind and solar energy storage project will be integrated with the Seychelles utility's existing power station.

When powering the main island of Mahe Island, the battery can serve the stable and safe operation of the Seychelles utility's conventional fuel power station.

At present, Seychelles relies heavily on fossil fuels, which account for about 20% of the country's total imports. In this respect, the Ile de Romainville solar project is expected to save approximately 2 million liters of fuel per year.

Seychelles Utilities CEO Philippe Morin said: "By combining solar and wind power, Seychelles renewable energy capacity can be doubled while releasing resources for economic development. Battery energy storage components can also solve the problem of renewable energy Intermittent challenges to further consolidate Seychelles' energy security."

The project's EPC services include submarine cables, expansion switchgear and groundwater piping systems for cleaning components, which will be completed in the second quarter of 2019.

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, said: “Seychelles places climate change at the centre of its sustainable development strategy. Financing this solar and integrated battery energy storage project will help support the island’s Seychelles. Priority areas for development, especially through the development of renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions. Cutting-edge projects such as the Ile de Romainville solar power plant demonstrate the advantages of renewable energy companies in long-term socio-economic development."

The goal of renewable energy utilization in Seychelles is 5% in 2020 and 15% in 2030. Seychelles has launched a tender for a 4MW floating photovoltaic power station in Rocher Lagoon. This will be the first public utility floating photovoltaic project in Africa and one of the first seawater floating photovoltaic power plants in the world.

Earlier this year, Masdar collaborated with the state-owned utility company Costa Rica Power Research Institute to share technical knowledge and project experience in solar, energy storage and smart cities.
